The Starlight Stag – How Lina Was Chosen to Protect the Magic of the Forest Every Hundred Years

Large text for little eyes.

Once upon a time, in a village that touched the edge of an ancient forest, there was a legend whispered only at bedtime:

“Every one hundred years, when the stars are their brightest, the Starlight Stag awakens.
It chooses one child with a kind heart to protect the forest, and the magic hidden within.”

Most people thought it was just a tale to make children behave. But Lina, who loved the forest more than anything, believed it was real.

She spent her afternoons drawing plants, rescuing baby birds, and listening to the wind through the trees. The forest, to her, felt alive—like it was waiting for something. Or… someone.

A Glow in the Midnight Woods

One night, during the Hundred-Year Starfall, when the sky glittered like a river of diamonds, Lina couldn’t sleep. Something tugged at her heart.

She slipped out of bed, tiptoed into the moonlit woods, and followed a strange soft humming that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere.

Then she saw it. Standing in a pool of starlight was a deer as tall as a tree, with antlers made of silver branches and eyes full of galaxies.

The Starlight Stag.

It lowered its head and spoke, not with words, but in Lina’s thoughts.

“You have listened when others forgot. You have cared when others hurried. You, Lina, are the one I choose.”

The Keeper of Hidden Things

With a gentle nod, the stag touched Lina’s hand with its glowing antlers. A shimmer spread through her fingers and heart.

From that moment, she could hear the songs of trees, understand the rustle of leaves, and even feel the heartbeat of the earth beneath her feet.

The stag showed her the hidden wonders of the forest: A pond that reflected the future, Mushrooms that whispered riddles, A fox that painted with its tail, and ancient roots that told stories in dreams.

But he also showed her danger: people building roads too close, cutting too much, forgetting the old ways.

“They do not see the magic,” the stag said. “But you will help them remember.”

A Guardian’s Promise

For many years, Lina became the quiet protector of the forest. She spoke at village meetings, started forest lessons at school, and guided hikers away from ancient trees.

And though no one else saw the Starlight Stag, they noticed that the woods were greener, the air sweeter, and the animals strangely calm when Lina was near.

When she grew old, she whispered the story to a child who loved moss and birds and starlight.

Because every hundred years, the Starlight Stag would return.
And somewhere, another kind-hearted child would be ready to listen.

The End !
