Milo the meerkat was different from the rest of his family. While others loved the warmth of the sun, Milo found himself fascinated by the nighttime sky.
Every evening, as the desert cooled, he scampered out of the burrow to stare at the twinkling stars. “They’re like lanterns,” he whispered.
He wanted to understand who kept those lights glowing and if anyone else was watching them too.
The First Night on Watch
One evening, Milo decided to stay awake while the others slept. He perched on the tallest rock near the burrow.
The moon cast silver light, and the stars blinked like tiny friends. Owls hooted in the distance, and fireflies danced nearby.
Milo didn’t feel afraid. Instead, he felt proud, like a little guardian of the desert night. “I’ll watch over the lights until morning,” he promised.
Friends of the Night Sky
Soon, animals that were usually shy in daylight began to visit.
A hedgehog waddled by and asked, “Why are you awake?” Milo explained, “I’m keeping watch over the night lights.” The hedgehog smiled and joined him.
Then a bat swooped down, saying, “The stars guide me, I’ll keep watch with you.” Even the owls nodded in agreement. Together, they formed a small circle of guardians, united by the wonder of the night.
A Promise Under the Stars
When dawn finally touched the horizon, Milo’s family awoke to find him still standing tall.
“Why stay up all night?” they asked. Milo smiled. “Because someone should care for the night lights.”
From then on, every evening, Milo and his nighttime friends gathered to watch over the desert sky.
The stars never seemed lonely again, and neither did Milo. He had found his place, guardian of the glowing night.
